Just did clean install of xp-pro on 500mhz,256ram,fic mb with atx pwr supply. unit shut down by its self fine when running 98se. now when I attemp to shut off machine I click start--then LOG-OFF, it sits for a minute or two then says its now safe to turn computer off. So I manually have to turn it off by holding the pwr button. Any ideas to restore complete auto-off would be appreciated.

When windows fails to completely shutdown it is almost always caused by something running in the background that ignores the windows shutdown command. I suggest you use MSCONFIG to disable items in the startup until you figure out which one it is.
