....seems like it's not wise to delete entries in your \windows\prefetch
directory, unless you've got a problem somewhere.

I had a problem a while ago, (forgotten what it was exactly), and someone in
here suggested that I delete entries in my prefetch folder - which solved
the problem. This morning, was having a read through these links
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=xp+prefetch+faq&meta=
and found some interesting reads including

Fwiw;
Install and Un-Install programs here somewhat frequently.
Those un-installed programs that probably never will be reinstalled will
still have a file in prefetch for some amount of time ... just quickly
looked and there's files dated 4/15, the install's and old files that were
trashed immediately after install of joebobs diskspinner.,,, makes sense to
me to free up a bit of memory and disk space occasionally by deleting
prefetch contents.
Three days, boots or so later it's repopulated with current use habits and
then it's back to full speed.

Here's a Microsoft page on Benchmarking XP

What he is on about is that you can choose WHAT you want to prefetch! I have
done so.
