Cindy,

Do both computers have both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer
Sharing for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties)? Do you
have shares setup on each?

From each computer, test shares visibility (use actual name / address of each
computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / error displayed in each test (8 tests total).

Cheers,
Chuck

Cindy,

OK, that sounds like a firewall blocking file sharing on desktop1. How about
laptop1? What results do you get?

Are you running BOTH Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on EACH computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Cindy,

IPConfig listings look normal. Both computers are on the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet,
using DHCP, with DHCP server and gateway being 192.168.1.1. So connectivity is
not a problem.

You have two computers - Laptop1, running XP Pro, and Desktop1, running XP Home.
You have Simple File Sharing enabled on Laptop1 (it's not optional on Desktop1).
Is the Guest account enabled (on Laptop1, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc")) on both computers?

You state that the browser service is running on both computers, and both Client
for MS Networks and File and Printer Sharing is enabled on both computers. And
that no firewalls are enabled on either (are any firewalls installed but not
enabled?).

"Cannot access" is a very vague condition. Let's try again. Please repeat the
following 8 tests, and let me know the exact error seen in each case.

From each computer, test shares visibility (use actual name / address of each
computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress

Cindy,

Let's see if it's a browser problem.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188305>

You can download Browstat from:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), needs no install, and runs from the command
prompt. Just drop it onto a couple workstations, and run it.

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

What service pack on Desktop1 and on Laptop1?

Chuck

Cindy,

That's from which computer? Did you run it on the other computer also?

And what service pack level on each computer?
