Xplorer2 is not freeware and does have a nag screen and says it expires
after 21 days which I do not have a problem with. Maybe you are referring to
2xexplorer which I did not test.
Xplorer2 'seems' stable but anything that crashes in Dependency Walker by
writing to memory it does not own is most definitely not stable.

i used 2xexplorer and now use xplorer2 and both are FREEWARE and have NO
NAG SREEN. i just started up both and i can't find the nag sreens you are
talking about. if you prefer fileant ... okay, but please do not tell people
wrong things about other programs.
i use xplorer2, because it's small and fast, but it crashed on me too - so
be warned.

No problem. I'd just again suggest pointing out that it's not freeware
(unless/until that changes) when you need to bring it up here.
Probably a good idea to point out that you are the author each time as
well.

I disagree, it is usually fairly obvious who I am. Are you the moderator of
this news group or a software author?
Just like it is obvious who Nikos is ... are you now going to tell him to
put 'I am the author of 2xexplorer' on his posts?
This is what I consider low, but if it gets him/her 2 million downloads why
not...
http://fileforum.betanews.com/review/945901171/1/view
and he probably did it to get off 1 out of 5 so I forgive because TC is cool
too.
Do not get me wrong if I wanted to be covert I could post as
someone else (a lot of people do this but I do not). If I wanted
to be nasty
[snip]

I didn't mean to imply that you might want to be nasty. Thanks for
clarifying things.

np. I know I am tired and grumpy today.

I haven't seen this news posted here yet, so ...

Xplorer2, the successor to 2xExplorer, has completed beta testing and has
been released - version 1.0.0.0.

Check it out. I think it's the best file manager by far.

http://netez.com/xplorer2 (home page)
http://netez.com/xplorer2/x2lite.htm (download page for freeware version).

"The free version is for private (home) or academic (school & university)
use only. You cannot use it in any commercial context, including but not
limited to: corporate, office, military, government etc. All commercial
users must obtain a licence for the full version."

xplorer2 only seems to be available as an install. Any link to a
no-install version?

2X was always available as an executable.

Will,

FileAnt is Shareware, as you have said, and this group is alt.comp.freeware.
Your discussions of FileAnt are off-topic here.

My statement that xplorer2 is the best file manager does not justify your
discussion of FileAnt. Obviously, in the context of this group, I meant
that xplorer2 lite is the best FREEWARE file manager. That is simply my
opinion. Others prefer PowerDesk, etc.

Besides, it appears you have been using this group to promote FileAnt under
different names and email addresses, including anonymous posts:
http://www.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&q=fileant+group:alt.comp.freeware+

In reading your replies to my post, you never made it clear that you were
the author of FileAnt. That came as a surprise to me.

On your webpage, you should also make it more clear that FileAnt is
Shareware, and not freeware or donationware. When you discussed FileAnt in
this group, I assumed it was freeware. That's why I checked it out. I
wouldn't have bothered if I had known it was Shareware.

dependency walker

i downloaded an evaluation version of rational's purify and couldn't
see any memory overwrites caused by x2 doing various operations on
win2000

so basically i can't reproduce what you say
it can be either:

* dependency walker getting it wrong
* caused by some of your hook or namespace extension dlls
* win 98 itself getting into knots!

Does xplorer2 come in a no-install version?

i was thinking about one of these but as it turns out the NSIS
installer has this kick-@ss compressor that ends up way more compact
than a simple ZIP archive

in the end of the day, the "lite" version installer does nothing more
than copy files!

Quite a lot was added to the program after alpha 59, particularly in terms
of the user interface. The new freeware version relies on the Windows find
files function and doesn't have scrap panes like the pro version. But those
advanced features may not be in alpha 59 either. You may just want to give
it a try and see if you like the new version.
Thanks..gave it a try and using it.:)

all 0.0.0.xx versions were in debug mode
the executable was huge and very slow, and contained a lot of bugs

(to the other poster)
you don't need dependency walker to run version 1.0 (actually
dep walker was never a requirement, even in debug mode)

(and to yet another poster)
i can't tell for sure what you found is x2's fault. Which program
did you use to detect the bad memory write errors? (I guess i should
do a purify one of these days). It could be down to your shell &
namespace extensions... but then again not. Does it happen everytime?

nikos
Thanks for teh debug info.It is as you said present. The latest lite version
does indeed open quicker.
Thanks again

Thanks, and does it still require Dependency Walker running, when X2 is
used in W98?

You may have missed it, but Nikos posted the answer to this question in
another message:

Give it a try! good luck.

Cool. You might think about mentioning this on the download page, if
you've not already. Just a thought.

Thanks, Spoon.

In the earlier version, running in W98SE, when I opened x2, it wouldn't
run, error message said Dependency Walker had to be running. The help
file stated exactly that, for W98. It was clearly a requirement.

I'll try 1.0. But except for the glitch (my other post) in 2XExplorer,
I've been very happy with it for years.

Future versions of FileAnt may or may not be as free but I will still post
here when people make 'best' claims.
As I said this is the statement I had a problem with...
Spoon2001 said Xplorer2 was the best file manager
not
Xplorer2 lite was best freeware file manager.

< snip >

There was no need for Spoon to say "freeware file manager". This is
a freeware newsgroup. We talk about freeware here. Duh !

I is free and said it 'may' not be in the future. I do not like calling it
freeware... I prefer software.
Your discussions of FileAnt are off-topic here.

Why? Xplorer2 and fileant are in the same type of program.
The Author of Xplorer2 saw the post about the bugs I found in Xplorer2 and
replied. imho I did him and you a favour.
My statement that xplorer2 is the best file manager does not justify your
discussion of FileAnt. Obviously, in the context of this group, I meant

Why not? Censorship? what you are saying is 'I think this is the best but do
not disagree with me and show me things I have not looked at'
that xplorer2 lite is the best FREEWARE file manager. That is simply my
opinion. Others prefer PowerDesk, etc.

I have never said FileAnt is the best and I am the author, however, I do get
several emails a week from people telling me it is. I simply pointed out
something which you had probably not tried.
Besides, it appears you have been using this group to promote FileAnt under
different names and email addresses, including anonymous posts:

I typed in Grass Hopper when I set up my new computer I was drunk at the
time ). and I honestly could not care less whether people have the ability
to work out if 'I am the Author of FileAnt' I would waste less time (like
this) posting when I do not. I have not posted much anyway. Not many people
read this so it is hardly advertising/promotion I was just tired and bored.
You are posting anonymously how do I know you do not have some secondary
interest.

If you do not have to pay it, is that not free? I changed 'donate' to 'buy'
on my webpage last week I have changed it back until I release the next
version. It was 'donate' for years.

I was wrong. I clicked the full version option which enables all the
features has a 21 day nag screen.

It could be lots of things, dependency walker is not wrong, it just tells it
like it is. I test software on 8 computers and every version of windows past
OSR2 not just once. It could just be the nag screen blocking a thread or it
could be worse. Did you try dependency walker anyone can use it it is ez and
free? It does more than just walk dependencies. It is a first chance
exception returned by windows from x2 exe. It has nothing to do with my
standard windows installs. win98 will get into knots and rightly so.

here is the error again, it is random (happens at different times during x2
startup and to different addresses)
00:00:14.181: HEAP[XPLORER2_UC.EXE]: HEAP:Free Heap block 818c80 modified at

Ah ok, if FileAnt was and is again "donationware", I have no problems with
it being discussed here.

My apologies, I overreacted a bit.

Experimenting a bit with FileAnt, but I wish it had more / different
keyboard shortcuts. I can't seem to get the Shift+{ and Shift+} to work.

No, I was right.
From the alt.comp.freeware faq http://clients.net2000.com.au/~johnf/faq.html
"In the context of A.C.F. it generally means legally obtainable computer
programs/utilities that anyone with an internet connection can obtain free
of (additional to internet) cost and does not have any "limitations" as to
it's use, e.g. only being able to be used for a certain time period and/or
only having some features able to be used."

xplorer2 does not fit that description (you have a choice between
limitations or nag).
fileant does fit that description.
