I have the intel 550. Can i install and use xp64 on it, or do i have to have
a 600 type chip?

The 6xx chips support Intel Extended Memory 64 technology (aka 64-bit
extension technology). The 5xx chips do not.

Figures... seems like the 64bit ddr2 access is a little useless on the
500chips then,...well ty anyway.

The chip set is (pretty much) irrelevant.
You need to have either have an Intel Processor that support the EM64T
extensions or an AMD64 processor like an Athlon64 or an Opteron.

Check your processor first to see what opertaing system it can support.
