XP2 upgrades download but fail to install

Some time ago I had to do a repair on my WinXP2. The repair seemed to go OK -
all the usual functions worked. I have auto update switched on and assumed
that I was still getting updates as they were released. The other evening I
manually ran update and got 98 updates!! They all downloaded OK but when I
tried to install them I got a window listing ALL the updates and saying that
they could not be installed??
I have a legit copy of XP and, prior to the crash, it has updated OK. Now,
every time I go to shut it down I get the message updates to install Windows
will shut down automatically after installation - or words to that effect.
Any help gratefully received.

Not that I noticed Colin. It was just one long list of 90+ security updates.
I did download the latest download software - ver 3.1 if I remember correctly.
Many thanks for your interest and help.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Hi Gerry,
There weren't any error codes - just a new window listing all 90+ updates
saying the following updates could not be installed.

How often did you try?

It sounds like the resolution you need is the link PA Bear is giving you.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed Icon
(if any) in the Status Column. What does it say for the failed update??
