Your XP CD is bootable. Change the BIOS setting to "Boot from CD" and follow
the instructions.
Do NOT forget to back up your data first!

Yes.

I don't think this will help accomplish the OP goals. Yes, the XP CD
is bootable, but it doesn't contain FDISK. It will partion/format the
HD, but only while reloading XP, which the OP doesn't want.

Try going to bootdisk.com and getting a DOS boot disk and put you CD
drivers on it. Then, after you boot from it, you can access your 98
CD and reinstall Win98.

You might also try and find a friend that has a 98 boot disk. Don't
laugh; there are still a LOT of folks out there who still use 98SE.
My dad loves it and swears by it. Go figure.

if you use FDisk it will destroy data on the partition(s) anyway - so why
not use the XP CD?

If you want to change partition without messing up data, then you need
something like Partition Magic. FDisk will NOT do it.

The goal of the OP was to put Win98 back on his computer. That won't
happen if they boot from the XP CD.

The OP can format with the XP CD and then abort the installation.
