That's because you're apparently using an upgrade CD, and not the "full"
version. XP can't be upgraded to a previous version (2k and XP are both
versions of NT).

Thanks for your reply. However, I am using the "Full" version of Windows 2k
Professional. Now the HDD that I am attempting to load was orginally a
Windows NT Workstation. Please assist with clearing up the difference between
the 2 OS after it has been re-formatted.

John,

Here is what I have done to see if I was mistaken regarding your statement
"That I am using an Upgrade version of windows. I installed Windows 2k on a
New Harddrive and the installation went well with know problems. Please advise

Insert Office 2k cd, reboot the PC, haveing ensured 'boot from cd' is
enabled in the bios, if neccessary
Delete all partitions when presented with the option during the installation
setup process, then follow the process to install win2k.
If your hd is connected to a sata controler you may have to use the F6
option early in the installation process to install sata controler drivers
from floppy

In that case boot with the Windows 2000 CD and when you get to the
disk/Partition selection screen delete the partition and create a new
one then reboot the machine. When you get to the same disk/partition
selection screen format the partition that you created and then proceed
to install as you did on the new disk. Forget about Fdisk, you don't
need that to do partitioning work and and install Windows 2000, all the
needed disk tools are available from the Windows 2000 setup program.

Hello John,

Sorry for the delay here, this issue goes back to the our earlier
conversation in regards to inserting the CD for Windows NT, 98 or 95. I can
insert the disk for any of the OS's but is there a why to wipe out the HDD
without being forced to insert an additional CD for it's files. Now once I
insert the CD I can delete the partitions without any problems.

Would this be some sort of proprietary format HDD or something at the
request from a company?

I have never heard of this. If you have a full retail Windows 2000
version you should not be asked to supply proof of ownership of a
previous Windows version, only an upgrade version would ask for this.
The full retail version should be able to do partitioning work without
asking for other previous Windows CDs. Maybe you should get a
diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer and zero write the drive
and try the install again.

Yes, this is what I have concluded. I will pull the drive HDD and zero write
the drive , also I was informed that I should attempt to clear out the BIOS
as well. I will keep you posted. Thanks for all you help.
