Need FDISK help...........

D

Dave

Hi,

I am getting ready to install Windows 98 on a 1ghz P3 with 512mb Ram system.

I have two hard drives a 10GB and a 40GB.

How should I partion them?

In FDISK I noticed options for DOS, Non-Dos, and logical, I am not sure
which to use for the second hard drive.

Also which should be my primary drive the 10GB or the 40GB?

Thanks for any advice and opinions!!!

Mmh. An excellent starting point would be to choose an appropriate newsgroup
for your question, i.e. one that deals with Windows 98.

ROFL! When you're hungry and things look slow at McDonalds, you go to the
busy hardware store instead!

Yeah, of course it is slow there. Windows 98 is years out of date and
fewer and fewer people are using it.

Since we are really here to help people, I will give this question a shot.
I would make the 40 GB drive the primary drive and set it up as one "primary DOS" partition.
I would set up the 10 GB drive as a slave drive and still FDISK it as one "primary DOS" partition.
Then install Windows 98 on the 40 GB drive, install programs there as well, but keep on of your Data
on the 10 GB drive.
Then you only have to backup the 10 GB drive to preserve your data. You can always reinstall the OS
and Programs, but you cannot replace missing personal data.

Better to help someone, even in the wrong newsgroup, that to do all that "flame crap" that seems to
occupy the efforts of a few very immature individuals in these news groups.

What you say won't work (as the competent people in the Win98 newsgroup
would immediately spot): Win98 will not natively recognise partitions above
32 GBytes. This is why the OP should post his question in the correct
newsgroup.

Please refresh the news group name. Isn't this a Windows XP group. I
was commenting on one possible reason why the OP was not getting a
response to their question.

As for the set up of the hard drives, depending on the use this PC
will be getting, set the 40 GB as the main drive and the 10 GB as
slave. Both primary.

It should be noted that these hard drive size would lead me to believe
that these will be getting old and reliability may be questionable.

Thanks, Richard!!!
