If you purchased the upgrade version of Windows XP Home Edition,
you purchased the wrong version. You need the upgrade version of
Windows XP Professional in order to upgrade over Windows 2000.

In fact... Windows XP is simply Windows 2000 with more fancy graphics, bugs
and stuff that just isn't worth $100. I suggest that you return it as soon
as possible!
It depends.
Windows 2000 can upgrade to Windows XP Pro but not Home.
If you bought OEM Windows XP, you can not upgrade at all since the OEM
CDs are intended for installation on a new computer and not for
upgrade.
Since you paid $100, it seems like you bought Windows XP Home upgrade.
Post back with more details if you do not fit the above circumstances.
