Xp x64 not Installing - Stuck on Starting windows

Ive been trying to install XP x64 for the last two days after my version of
xp sp2 somehow lost its protocols, there is a long story to that, and lets
not talk about it here.

I downloaded the trial version, and have burnt it 5 times now... using 3
different burners over 2 different PC's and every one that i have burnt has
seemd to fail.

System specs are:
athlonXP 64 3000+
6600GT
Nforce4

It loads all the drivers for the installation and all the usb things, etc.
It gets to the point right after it asks you if you want to add your own
drivers from disk or location (if you so selected to, which i dont normally).
This point is "starting windows". It just stops. The cd spins up. The CD
spins down... and sits spinning at a very low speed, very very low speed, and
thats it. It will sit there overnight.

I used the Ultimate Boot CD to see if there are any problems with my ram,
and after 7 passes of 6 tests, there was nothing. I used the same cd to check
my CPU for problems. Nothing. 1000000 something something algorithms
processed flawlessly. Calculations right etc.

The thing i noticed was there just seems to be no way to get up a console or
kernal or anything that displays what the hell is happening. If anyone can
tell me a solution I'd very much appreciate it. Also my HDD's are fine. I
already ran a bunch of checkdisks etc on them... I wiped one of my 40gigs
(the one with my broken XP) to install XP x64. I would really be interested
in Buying x64 if the hype that ive heard is real. That or i go download
mandriva and go back to an OS that i use non directX games. (quake 3 quake 4
and its various doom3 engine based mods ie cod2 etc)

Thank you for any help!

I am getting the same problem you are pretty much. The whole thing installs
fine, the when it gets to "Applying settings" it stops. When I restart the
computer manually I get to "Welcome", then it sits there for about a minute,
then loads the Windows XP x64 desktop background. with no icons or taskbar. I
can get to the task manager, but cannot start explorer.exe or anything else
for that matter, and when I go to the "users" tab it shows no users. It seems
that windows isn't creating a user account or something like that, but thats
just a guess.

Just to clarify, Mine doesnt install anything. It never makes it into the
windows installer, it just does the installer boot screen with the driver
loading, and then when it says "Starting windows" in the bottom of the
screen... it stops. Just sits there. Nothing installed or anything. HDD is
as empty as the day I wiped it (yesterday).

you might try disabling in the BIOS anything that is absoluely not needed for the install.
like USB, PARALLEL, SERIAL , no overclocking, extra hard drives.

etc.....

Hate to say it, but ive already been through all this. Alot... I restored
the dafaults. Nothing. I physically removed hdd's and tried each (of the
four) individually. Nothing. I dont have any overclocked settings, and
overclocking it doesnt change it. I tried a different cd rom. In fact i tried
a DvD rom too. (in the process i broke a cd rom by mistake by dropping it
huzzah) Ive tried installing windows XP non-x64, the exact same problem.

hold on. The exact same problem? Whats happening here? I installed XP
non-x64 a while ago and thats what ive been using forever... Whats changed
since then? There is no error or anything, it just sits there. So I cant
really use it for help.

"Maybe its a problem my pc now has with the windows installer" <~~ at this
point running out of ideas.

I install Mandrake version 9.2. It boots up.. starts the install and says
"Cannot find a CD-Rom. "huh? What do you think you are running from?" I
scrounge around more, and fine fedora. Same problem. Look and find Yopper
Linux. Something slightly different, went to the kernel and saw there was an
I/O problem.

So what we have is... a failure to detect the CDrom? Something to do with CD
rom drivers? Changing the CDroms isnt helping... it probably has something to
do with the bios then?

So, Ive been working on trying to update the bios, but i dont have a floppy
drive.... So here comes the story of today. I downloaded about 3000000 apps
(slight exaggeration). Ive been burning off CD's with probably about a total
used space of 1.44mb. Bootable, and unuseable. The latest one, ive been
using varying versions of DOS to try and flash my bios. Some state when you
go to flash the bios "Fatal exception. Permission *something something*" For
that i think, probably the DOS is just in the ram, and I dont have full read
write permissions.

The other sort of DOS ive been using, is one that doesnt boot.. I get a
similar thing to windows/linux. It just doesnt load. It just sits there....

Im starting to suspect something is seriously wrong with my:
a) Bios, or
b) Chipset
and either way, none of these have mattered because always windows have been
dealing with all the drivers for both of these, not my bios. Ive been
running this installation (before i wiped it 3 days ago) for 2 years without
problems, but also for that matter, ive had this x64 chipset that ive been
wanting to use. So finally when people are starting to rave about how good it
is etc, I try it and... lose everything it seems.

At the momment i doubt i can come up with a solution short of replacing my
Motherboard. The MAJOR problem with that in being, im a University student.
All my money goes to food rent fuel and bills. It would be months before i
could save up the extra money to buy a new motherboard. Well probably two
months, but in that time, i would have lost many hours of assignment and
study work...

While this clearly isnt anyone's fault but my own, I can hardly blame it on
XP or XP-x64 I am incredibly lost for words at my misfortune. I suppose i
just shouldnt have carted my PC around so much, i probably broke something
while going to LAN's etc.

Ahwell. Life's life.

are you by chance using a usb keyboard.
if so put in a standard PS2 one and see if it makes a difference.
I have had problems before with installing and using a usb keyboard.
