XP wont start up

im running windows xp home. and it was working fine one day
didnt change any settings and then the next day i switched
it on and it wont start up. ie it runs into the Windows XP
screen, then the blue 'Welcome' screen then it just shuts
down and starts the whole sequence again.
if anyone has any suggestions i would be very grateful.
but if i have to reinstall xp from scratch then so be it.
again !!

Before it gets to the Welcome screen, press F8 and then select 'Last Known Good Configuration'.
