XP won't shut down

Hi - when I try to shut down my computer it saves
settings, says "shutting down," and then just hangs and
won't shut down. Someone said this could be McAfee
scanning for viruses, but it hangs forever. Anyone know
how to remedy this? If yes, please email me at

If you suspect McAfee, try disabling it and see if it
still hangs.
If McAfee turns out not to be the problem (I'm assuming
here that it hangs every time, without fail):

next time you are about to shut your computer down, just
hit ctrl-alt-del and go to task manager... have a look
through the "processes" tab to see what is running. Your
culprit is likely in the list. Ignore the processes that
are part of Windows to begin with (search your hard drive
for the .exe if your not sure, or try the net...) as they
are less likely to be the culprit and see what's left.
You can eliminate the rest by 'end task'ing one, then shut
down - did it hang? if not, you found the problem, if it
did, reboot and try a different one.

cheers,
