XP won't run system restore

G

Guest

I recently updated my XP system from the Microsoft Windows Update site. The
following were updated:

1. Cummulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service
Pack2(KB834707)
2. Critical Update for OfficeXP on windowsXP Service Pack2 (KB885884)

When I attempt to run System Restore I get the following error message:

An exception occurred while trying to run
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cpl",System"

Both shell32.dll and sysdm.cpl are present in the correct location. I cannot
find anything at:

http://support.microsoft.com/

Can anyone shed some light on this?

TIA

It looks like some files that are needed for System Restore have been
corrupted.

This may or may not have been caused by those updates you recently
installed.

Please follow these steps to reinstall the System Restore function.

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, switch to Classic View and
double-click Folder
Options.

2. Under the View tab, click to check "Show hidden files and folders", and
uncheck
"Hide protected operating system files", click Ok.

3. Launch Explorer or double-click My Computer, locate to C:\Windows\inf,
right-click on SR (SR.inf) and select install.

4. If the system requests the XP CD, please insert the CD into CD-ROM and
finish
the installation according to the instructions.

I hope this helps.
