xp won't restart

Just after having replied "yes" to the update from internet for windows
xp I tried to restart but as soon as the xp blue screen appeared it
stopped responding and got stuck. Is there a solution? If I try to restore
the xp installation will it destroy my files? What sould i do does anyone
know?

What update? Was it an email or a notification from the Autoupdate utility?
