I recently installed an old hard disk (Win 98) in my new computer (XP pro)
in the master/slave configuration in order to transfer some files. The BIOS
will recognize the old HD, but once XP boots up it is nowhere to be found.
I tried scanning for new hardware in computer management. The hard drive
does not exist under "disk management" either. I also tried booting from
the older drive but the new conguration is so different that it cannot. Any
suggestions?

Michael...
A few questions...
1. You're certain that "old hard disk" is not defective?
2. When you installed it in your new computer -- you're certain that it's
jumpered correctly and that its data cable is correctly seated both on the
drive and the motherboard connectors?
3. What is the make/model of your two hard drives?

I had a similar problem a few HD's (and years) back. One slave was not
recognised 100% of the time at initial cold start up. It resulted in the
operating system start up being a little quick for the old drive which, once
powered up from cold, took a few seconds longer to reach its operating spin
speed. I did as you have done posted the problem in the then available
newsgroups and was guided to a BIOS setting which determines the time
allocated for the OS to interrogate the drive(s). I increased this setting
by about 5 seconds and hey presto the slave drive was seen at every start
up.

Take a look through your BIOS for any timing/drive related settings and if
there do as I did.

I have a friend with the same problem.

He then loaded Windows 2000 and that recognised the 2nd disk.

Consequently, he dumped XP and is using 2000.

A few of us have looked at the problem, but no solution so far.

Be interested to hear of any explanation.

Did you try it on BOTH IDE chains?

All Western Digital and now some Maxtor a Seagates have special jumper
settings for a drive that's on a cable alone, or sharing a cable. Even
though the drive might be Master in both cases the jumper setting is
different. In DOS the setting doesn't matter so that's why everything
seems fine until Windows loads.

Don't know now. The old machine has since been donated. I'm thinking that
I might try using the master/slave configuration on a 2000 machine.
