XP won't play Audio CD's!

M

Miguel Sandoval

I'm new to XP and after having set my XP Pro installation to play music, I
find it won't
play audio CD's, but I had no problems getting the system to play MP3's.
I'm not new to computers, so I know how to set software and hardware. I
did some research and went through every setting I could find in XP
relating to setting audio for the CD player, as well as the settings for
WINAMP relating to playing CDs and other audio. Nothing works so far. In
WINAMP, it says "Embedding" in the playlist window, when I try to play an
audio CD. Then things just get stuck from there and I can no longer use
the software. In Plextools audio player, it actually LOOKS like its
playing the CD. But no sound! Every setting I checked in XP relating to
the CD drive says "This device is working properly" and the drivers are
correct, no yellow exclamation marks. It isn't a hardware problem, because
the same hardware on the same system has worked fine playing audio CD's
under Win98SE for years. And I don't believe its a simple software setting
problem (ie. Winamp settings), because Plextools at least recognizes the
tracks on the audio CD and appears to play them. I have no problems
accessing data on the CD, so XP -is- recognizing the CD burner. Any
suggestions?

try analog playback or if that doesn't work try digital
mode.

Hi,

What kind of player you are using, Window Media Player?
If yes, try open WMP, click the tools tab/Options and then click the File Types tab, Check all the boxes in the drop down menu or check the box "select all", then click apply and OK..

By the way, I would suggest you to update WMP to WMP9 series.
Go to windows update site to download it.

This only turned up a reference to WMP. As I mentioned, I do not use WMP,
and it was the first thing I uninstalled when I installed XP. I'm using
Plextools and Winamp as my media players. Plus, I'd already gone through
WinXP's help system with no success. But I solved the problem anyway.
Turned out to be the most obvious thing everyone overlooks. I didn't have
the volume turned up! I thought I did, but that's because Microsoft et al.
have designed a million volume controls all over the place, software &
hardware - and you have to know where to find them all to be sure one
isn't muted. The one that wasn't turned up was the CD-ROM volume,
accessible only through a nest of menus. I still can't play audio CD's in
Winamp (it crashes every time I try), so that as it turns out, is a
separate problem altogether...
