no audio from cd drive

I use Windows XP on my Acer laptop. When I play mp3's, stream audio/video or
system sounds all goes well. When I try to watch a dvd, I get picture but no
sound and I can't play a cd from the drive. Those same disks play fine in
the home dvd player or boombox. Are there settings that I am missing in the
sounds section of Control Panel? Any suggestions how I can restore the
missing audio.

Paul, go back to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio
Devices>Volume>Advanced>Under CD Player make sure the mute box is not
checked and the Volume Slider is at least half way.

What are you using to play the DVD? WMP? IF so search for Windows XP Video
Decoder Checkup Utility and run it. It will tell you if you have a
compatible decoder on your system to play DVD's on your level of WMP. WMP
does not supply a decoder itself and it usually shows up the way you are
seeing. You may have to purchase a decoder.

I've used the software that came with my DVD drive (Asus DVD (on the Nero
CD)). Also there is PowerDVD that the Asus one appears to based on.
