I have been asked to fix a computer for a friend and I am stumped. Here are
the specs for the machine

1) HP laptop model # N5310
2) 128 Megs of RAM
3) XP home is installed
4) Pentium III processor

The computer goes through the boot just fine. I am then asked to login, I
proceed to log in, the computer waits about 15-20 seconds and then says that
user is logging out and I am dumped back into login screen. I have also
tried going in under safe mode and the same thing happens. I also tried
going back to the last known good configuration, no luck. Any help at all
would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

So you log in on your computer, it acts like its starting to log you in, and
then it logs you right back out?

Yes, it seemed odd to me also. It doesn't say anything about denying access
to due to an improper password. It just saves the information for that user
and logs me back out. Any Ideas??

I don't know the history about the computer. I was able to use a CD boot
disk to log on to the hard drive and ran a program from McCaffee called
"Stinger". It didn't find any viruses and my options are very limited
because I can't log in to the Windows OS. Any Ideas??

Hi

It is a leftover registry setting after spyware removal that can cause this.
Stinger will not detect this.

Just follow the instructions in the links I provided for the wsaupdater.exe
problem and see if you can solve it. If you find that it doesn't apply, see
the first link to the knowledge base article 313322 that is a very general
link on how to try to fix such problems.

Try the link Torgeir posted about wsaupdater. What you see is a common
by product from having removed spyware.
