XP won't hibernate

All of a sudden my laptop won't go into hibernation mode -
- why would this be?
 
Details, please.
Did you do a MS update or other software changes just prior to this problem?
Do you have a standby button in the shutdown window (that is not greyed
out)?
If you push the shift button while viewing the Shutdown window, does Standby
change to Hibernate?
Can you set your machine to automatically hibernate and see if it can do
that?
