I haven't changed anything on my system, but today my
computer won't boot. The only thing I can get to is the
BIOS. I can't boot in safe mode. I know that the XP CD
has a repair utility on it, but I don't know what to do
when I run the utility. Sorry if this is vague, but any
help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

If you can only get to the bios then your hard disk may have failed.

Check the connections (power and cable) to your hard disk on the
motherboard.

Do you get any "beeps" when you power up? Does the info on the bios powerup
recognise the hard disk?

Are you getting an error message? If so, what is it? Can you get into
Safe Mode (press F8 as the computer is starting). If no to the latter,
do a Repair Install by booting with the CD then choosing "Install" and
then after XP finds your current installation, "Repair".

I can't get into safe mode, and my original question was
I don't know what to do when I choose repair from the
CD.

Before doing a "Repair Install", but the XP CD-ROM. Take the
Recovery Console. Administrator password will be null (Blank).
At the prompt type Chkdsk C: /R
This will verify the integrity of your drive. Once it completes then
retry your XP using a normal Boot. If that fails again, then you
should attempt a Repair install.
