Xp won't boot

Hi,

I'm wondering whether someone can help.

I'm using Win XP Home Edition and I tried updating to SP2 and half way
through the update, my laptop crashed. I've had several problems with
it since. I could not boot and I was told to use the Win XP Recovery
Console.

After several attempts, I can get to the start-up screen with the Win
XP logo etc but after that, the screen goes blank and my laptop freezes
and does nothing at all. Normally the Welcome screen would appear with
the users created on my laptop.

I've tried booting in safe mode and at first i had lots of problems
with mup.sys file which I've now disabled but now the computer hangs
when it comes to file viaagp.sys in the drivers folder.

Could someone please help? I've got a lot of data and files on the PC
which I don't want to lose. Is there anyway round to this other than
losing my data and starting all over again?

Many thanks,
Sham.

You should always have a full and complete backup of important data. This
goes for normal operations but especially before doing anything as involved
as installing an OS upgrade.

You should backup your data first. There are several options.
1. Install the drive in another XP or windows 2000 computer as a slave
drive and copy the data.
2. Put the drive in an external drive housing, connect it through USB to
another XP or windows 2000 computer as a slave drive and copy the data.
3. Create a Bart's PE disk, boot with that and copy the data to a flash
drive.
4. Download and create a bootable Linux CD such as Knoppix. Boot from that
and copy the data to flash drive, or if there are two CD drives, one of
which is burner, use the k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the
data to CD.
5. Take the drive to a competent computer tech and ask them to save the
data.

You're a star, thank you so much!!

I tried the link you gave for Microsoft on "How to use the Automatic
Recovery feature to recover your computer if the
WindowsXPService Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully" and it did the trick.

I uninstalled SP2 and restarted my computer and I was back in!

Thanks once again, you've really helped a lot! :)

Oh that's great! Frankly I didn't have a lot of hope your issue would get
resolved this easily. Thanks for posting back.
