XP won't boot with USB devices plugged in

JUST did a clean install of XP Pro and I am having the exact same problem
that caused me to do the install. If I have ANY USB devices installed, XP
won't boot. I have four on board USB boards, 2 more PCI cards with 4 each for
a total of 12. I can't seem to locate any updated drivers. Uninstalling and
re-sinstalling the USB drivers doesn't work.

I've tried it with all kind sof combinations of devices and there doesn't
seem to be a common thread. MoBo, power supply, memory, HD are all fine. All
bought within a year.

Any ideas?

I would try removing the PCI-USB cards and see if you can boot up with a USB
device plugged into one of the motherboard-connected USB. Maybe you can
isolate the problem to one PCI card or USB connector.

Also, does this happen at the beginning of the boot sequence, that is, before
windows xp starts? If so, this is not a XP problem and reinstalling or
changing anything in XP won't solve the problem.

Tested both with and without the cards to the same result. BIOS not set to
boot from USB. It will get as far as right before the bliue login screen. the
second I remove the devices it goes right into the login screen.

Nothing like this ever happened until my last clean install a month or so
agao. I think I have somewhere lost the good drivers for the USB 2.0. Did MS
include a new USB 2.0 driver in one of their worthless updates?

If I disbale USB 2.0 in BIOS it boots just fine regardless of what is
plugged in.

Check the BIOS setup for an option called "Legacy USB". If it's
enabled XP will attempt to initialize/load drivers prior to the GUI
loading. Some devices such as USB external drives seem to stop
or prevent XP from booting when Legacy USB is enabled.

There isn't an option for Legacy USB. I have:

USB 1.1 Controller
USB 2.0 Controller
USB Keyboard Support
USB Mouse Support

If I disable the USB 2.0 controller it boots fine. I think I have a bad
driver. My MoBo manufacturer (Gigabyte GA-K8U) does not have any updated USB
Controller dirvers available. Just what came with the board. It alsways
worked before, I don't know why it would stop working now...

USB Keyboard and Mouse options equate to Legacy USB. If
you don't use a USB mouse or keyboard in any type of DOS
style boot or tool then I'd toggle those values to "Disabled".

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. Is there someplace I can find
a USB 2.0 controller driver other than MS that you know about?

Enabling USB 2.0 in the bios only affects the onboard USB controller(s), not
the add-on cards. So, you've narrowed the problem to the onboard USB when
USB 2.0 is enabled in the bios. I don't know the solution, but further
replies from others that digress from the problem that you've determined
should be ignored.
