XP won't boot up

I can't boot up my Toshiba laptop. It gets to the first Windows XP screen,
with the flashing blue bar across the bottom aneed then won 't go any
farther. I can boot up just fine in safe mode with networking (thus
enabling me to write this note), but it won't boot up normally. I tried
doing a virus scan and two different system restores, but no changeXP. It
worked just fine yesterday, but not this morning. Any suggestions?

Start up the computer and bring up the Start Up menu as you would for
Safe Mode, only this time choose the "Enable Boot Logging" option and
then Normal Startup.

When it hangs up make note of the time that it stopped. Wait at least
5 minutes and then restart the computer in Safe Mode.

Locate the file ntbtlog.txt in your Windows folder and ensure that it
the date and time stamp is from your failed normal mode startup rather
than the current successful Safe Mode startup.

The contents of the ntbtlog.txt, if it is from the failed normal
startup, should show how far into the startup process it got and which
files, if any, failed to load. Post the last 10 or so lines of the
file back here plus the names of any failed items in the rest of the
file.

Good luck

In addition to Ron's suggestion boot using Safe Mode and examine
the Event Viewer logs for a normal mode boot and post copies of Warnings
/ Error Reports in the System and Application logs.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
