XP won't boot after SP2 install

Ok i've been to a few other forums about this but here is the jist. I have a
Gateway Performance 1700 PC from 2001. It has a intel (Monterrey) Motherboard
- 1.7-GHz [Part #2513603] . I am not sure of the processor. I have read all
of the offical articles FROM MICROSOFT in the event a failure occurs while
upgrading.

I already know to try to boot to safe mode or put in the windows XP cd etc.
My cdrom won't boot for some reason and i can't get into safe mode or best
configuration. I already read that older intel processors such as Prescott
have a problem handeling the service pack 2 upgrade and i need to thus
upgrade the bios but i didn't so i am stuck right now. I cannot run the intel
utility from MS because i can't get into windows to determine if it is infact
the older version but i am guessing this is the case since after i upgraded
to SP2 it wouldn't boot.

Now my question is this, i am here at this article now:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/

I am about to download one of the bootdisks and see if this can help but i
am not sure which one to download, should i use the SP2 ones since i just
installed SP2 or should i use the original because that is what my CD has on
it or SP1 because that is what i had on the computer? Thanks in advance
gurus.

Try cleaning the xp cd,use Isoprpyl rubbing alcohol 70 % or so,its the same
ingredints found in tape cleaning solutions from maxell or scotch,it costs
..95
or so.After start computer into the BIOS,install xp cd,select to boot to xp
cd (
1st boot priority-or similiar),once at xp info screen select recovery, press
enter
for password,then type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,type:EXIT Let xp start.

Andrew thank you for your response. I got windows to boot from the cd and
enter the repair utility, i followed microsoft's instructions and than
rebooted and it still does the same thing which is basically get to the xp
logo screen than reboot again. I downloaded a bootable version of the intel
processory frequency utility as i read to do so somewhere when i run that it
says i have an unsupported processor so i am wondering if this does in fact
mean i need a bios update and that is the reason why SP2 did not take. I read
to rename update.sys and than retry so i am going to attemp that next.

Thanks but this does not help that link sends me to another link that i have
already read at MS and it does not work. Nor does the program that MS
recommends to fix the computer if it does not respond after restart, it
appears that program located here:

is something i run IN WINDOWS which i presently cannot boot into. Any other
recommendations?

try this first.
if you have access to another pc, which you must have since you are posting,
try to make a boot disk, which is not the same as Setup Boot disks.
http://www.theeldergeek.com/create_xp_boot_disk.htm

If that doesn't get you in, it's the SP2 version you are looking for, since
that is what's on your pc right now.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...07-99f7-4a2d-983d-81c2137ff464&displaylang=en

Now, as far as the BIOS is concerned, that's something you should have
Flashed before you installed SP2, I know, water under the bridge. And
Flashing is, at best, risky.

However, I would suggest uninstalling SP2 until you are sure your computer
is really ready for the patch.
You should be able to do that in Add/Remove programs, or, if you restore (
using System Restore) back to a point before you installed Sp2, that'll work
as well.

I made the boot disk as per your link with the specified files and it didn't
do anything so i had to format the disk to be an ms-dos bootable disk, i than
put the files back on and the disk was read and it said "starting...
Microsoft Windows Millennium" than just goes to an a:\ prompt, what gives?

I also was able to update my gateway bios because the whole problem was that
gateway said NOT to format the disk i did than put the files on and updated
the bios. That didn't let me boot back into windows though, but now that my
bios is updated what do i do? I already changed the name of update.sys and
windows still won't boot it just keep restarting so i fear this may be
something else, how the hell can i fix it?

If the files were copied correctly onto the floppy, turn your computer off,
put the floppy in, and restart your computer.

Ok well the files were copied correctly and i even went online to
bootdisks.com and downloaded an Xp quick boot disk (which are basically the
same files you told me to put on the disk) and as i said it says starting
than it goes to the a:\ prompt. I am beginning to think that this is a bigger
problem. I just installed norton than i didn't reboot and SP2 was being
installed than it rebooted and never came back, i am getting a blue screen
error message saying: STOP C0000221 BAD IMAGE CHECKSUM. IMAGE CRYPT32.DLL IS
POSSIBLY CURRUPT. THE HEADER CHECKSUM DOES NOT MATCH THE CURRUPTED CHECKSUM.
So is there a way to replace this crypt32.dll via a dos disk? Thanks.
