XP won't allow install of new software

J

Joe Springer

I'm running XP Pro on a system with three hard drives: C, F and G. Windows
is installed on the C drive.

After removing MS Streets and Trips using Add/Remove, I tried to delete the
old directory tree from file manager. Using first my normal account and
then the administrator account, the system told me that I didn't have the
authority to remove the files and directories.

I then tried to install a new version of Streets and Trips, first in
C:\Program Files and then on my F drive and was again told that neither my
account nor administrator had sufficient authority.

How can I overcome this unexpected problem?

(on the same day, the system allowed me delete an old version of Encarta,
delete the directories and install a new version)

Thanks.

Joe

Is this a standalone or networked computer? Have you tried after
rebooting? Are you sure you are logged on as Administrator?

Limited account

The limited account is intended for someone who should be prohibited
from changing most computer settings and deleting important files. A
user with a limited account:

a.. Generally cannot install software or hardware, but can access
programs that have already been installed on the computer.
b.. Can change his or her account picture and can also create, change,
or delete his or her password.
c.. Cannot change his or her account name or account type. A user with
a computer administrator account must make these kinds of changes.
d.. Can manage his or her network passwords, create a reset password
disk, and set up his or her account to use a .NET Passport.

Hi Joe,
I just had the same problem with encarta. Here is what I did: run add/remove
program; click on add new progrem (on the left margin), and follow the
instruction. It worked for Encarta.
Good luck,
Andre
