Hi.
Friend of mine's network adapter would not work so she bought a wireless
USB. Installed it, and said she got the internet for a few minutes then
nothing. She can't connect.
I had a look and the Utility for the USB is fine and has all the correct
settings, a good signal but no internet.
The weird thing is the Network adaptor does not show in Connections or the
notification task bar, only the LAN wired one.
I tried to use the wireless setup wizard in the control panel but that
stopped when you're meant to choose the drive that the USB is showing, says
error and that's it.
I use Vista so am a bit rusty with XP but shouldn't the wireless adaptor
show in Connect to ? Coz I could then configure it.
The other worry of course is that when I type in the Router's isp in the
internet browser it's not finding it.
There's a laptop in the house which is connected wirelessly to the router
and it can open the router's utility from the IE browser.

Any ideas please.

Check for malware.
Reset all network settings.
Download/install the latest version of the software for the device from the
manufacturer's web page.
Use the device's software to confgure it if at all possible.

Have a look in Device Manager (under control panel>system) to see if the USB
device is listed. If so it may indicate a driver issue.

I've also found that BIOS/CMOS data errors can cause USB devices to fail to
be recognised correctly. Performing a CMOS reset from the bootup screen or
removing the mobo battery for a while might clear this.

If resetting the CMOS, be aware that a SATA disk may not boot if it reverts
to AHCI mode. If this happens don't panic, just look for this setting and put
it back to legacy (IDE) mode.

Sounds like the USB has lost connection to the adapter. Try changing the
USB to another port and see if shows up then. Unfortunately, I've had
nothing but trouble with USB WiFi adapters, they are not very good, they
lose signal all of the time, and if they don't lose signal, they lose
connection to the USB port.

Yeah, there is no wireless connection detected, so there is no IP
address that is assigned to that machine. So no way to access anything
on the internet or even within the router without an IP address.
