(XP)windows unable to start sucessfully

HELP!!!
My gateway XP home, says unable to start sucessfully. It
gives me 5 modes to restart in: Safe, safe with
networking, safe with command prompt, normal, last good
config. I tried all and none work. HELP!! I have no
warrenty and gateway wont help me. What can I try? Please

If nothing works, then you will need to do a Repair Install at the very
least. I don't know if the Gateway Restore Disk will allow it, but I
expect it will. Look in the manual. Since we don't know from your post
why your computer suddenly was unable to start, we don't really know if
its had a hardware failure or what. You may want to bring the computer
to a good local computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of
store) to have them check it out.

Thank you for your quick responce. I actually was going to
a BestBuy today but after talking to them on the phone, I
realized they didnt know much and were just going to wipe
out the hard drive and reinstall it. Everything will be
lost. Hell I can do that for free!
Gateway says it should be a quick fix and I wont lose
anything, yet they wont help me without paying extra $$$
with no guarentees.

If it will support a repair - and I *think* Gateway supplied the right
disks - the method is to enter the BIOS setup and set it to boot CD
before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take
'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair
Installation'. This will retain your existing software installations
and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again, especially
SP1;

It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.
