We apologize for the inconvience, but Windows did not start sucessfully

During the process of writing to a cd this message
occured:
We apologize for the inconvience, but Windows did not
start sucessfully. A recent hardware or software change
might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restared
unexpectally or was shut down choose last knoe
configuration:
choices are:

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known configuration
start normally

No matter what I choose, it brings me back to the same
screen.

When I use the recovery cd or diskette it brings me to an
A prompt. When I type in c: I get an invalid drive error.

What are some the general reasons for this type of error?

Prior to this event I kept getting this message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is
increasing the size of your virtual memory pageing file.

I did go in and increase the virtual memory double the
size of RAM.

I did not get the message again, but I only used the
computer a couple of days since the change.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for your time and attention.

My mom's computer I just bought her at Thanksgiving has the same problem. It occurred overnight while logged off. Can't use any of the options to get XP to run. No software or hardware was installed recently. Please respond.

Use Last known good configuration which should resolve the problem.

Start the system, Tap F8 till you get the Windows Startup screen.
Select Last known Good configuration.
After successfull start, restart the system.

This should work.

If not, search MS Knowledgebase articles for how to start when registry
files are corrupted - or something like that.

There are a few more steps to take if it's caused by corrupted registry.

Good luck

Thank you for your response.

You do not think it is a hard drive failure???
I figured I would purchase and replace the harddrive.
What would corrupt the registry?
Again thanks so much for your time

Sherry,

I had the same type of problem or screen I was getting with our WinXP Pro. I
found the fix elsewhere here in the newsgroup. I just can't find the
specific one for reference, but here's the web site it sent me to.
http://www.digitalwebcast.com/2002/03_mar/tutorials/cw_boot_toot.htm

It references Windows XP Crashed! but follow out the procedure and I was up
and running. You'll need your WinXP CD and get into the 'Recovery Console'.
