XP Windows Explorer Very Slow With JPEGs

Hi,

When opening a folder with approx a number of JPEGs in it with the folder
setting set to list, Windows Explorer "chugs" through each file and updates
the icon next to the file name. Why does it keep doing this? It is also very
slow when the same folder is attempted to be viewed as thumbnails.

The folder location is in say C:\pics\holiday\

Any help appreciated.

Double click on any photo file you have in a folder.
The picture will open.
Tell us the software the picture is opening in.
Is this picture opening in Windows Picture and Fax viewer (the default) or
is it opening in some photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop or some
other photo editing software?
Also, tell us how much RAM memory you have on your computer. It should be
something like 128, 256 or 512 MB or higher.

My PC has 1 gig of RAM. Adobe Photoshop (ver. 7 I think) is installed
and opens when the file is double clicked. I found another post
in this newsgroup with a similair problem though. It looks like Adobe
Photoshop has set something against the JPEG meaning that when
browsing through Windows Explorer each JPEG is cached
which explains why it chugs along.

Right clicking on a JPEG, selecting Properties and then unchecking "Cache
Tumbnails" or similair is supposed to rectify this. I'll try it later.

Yes, try this first.
You may need to go further.
Change the association of JPG files from Photoshop back to the default,
Windows Fax and Pictures viewer.
To do this, right click on a JPG file and click on Open with. Click on
Choose program at the bottom of the opening menu. A list will open, select
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and check the box "Always...."
Now, when you double click on a JPG, it will open with Windows Fax and
Picture viewer.
If you want to edit a picture, right click on it and click on Open with and
click on Photoshop on the opening list. Or just start Photoshop and open the
picture you want to edit from there.
