after fitting a new motherboard cpu and video card, my windows xp will
not start. I swapped the original hard drive with xp installed, which was
starting fine.but since swapping the new motherboard and bits it will not
get past the black boot up screens. all it does is constantly restart. I
have tried safe mode and it still does the same. I put the hard drive back
in my old pc and it starts fine. am I missing something?

Yes, you missed a step. I've done exactly what you want to do at least
two times. After each, I had to do a Repair/Install by booting from the
XP CD and proceeding as though I wanted to do a new install. Right
after accepting the license agreement you will be offered a chance to
'Repair an existing installation' or some words like that. Be carefull
to bypass the 'R' option when you get the 'Windows Setup' screen upon
booting. As I said, just pretend you are going to do a new install.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

At the very least you need to boot from your XP installation CD and do
a repair install. But...if your copy of XP was preinstalled on your
machine, it's probably an OEM copy that's locked to the original
motherboard. If this is the case, you are screwed. The only way out is
to buy a new full, retail version of XP.

I've been following several threads about OEM pre installed XP's for a
while. My conclusion at this point is your suggestion about buying
retail version to supplement the OEM CD is money well spent if you plan
to mess around much with your setup in any way. (Don't we all!, I wonder
where the cover for my machine is? :) )

I do have an OEM copy provided with a machine I had put together for my
wife last Christmas. It works fine for using the Repair Console on
booting from it on either of my two other machines with the retail
versions installed. However, it will not do a repair install on them
without jumping through some hoops regarding activation. For that I use
a SP1 slipstreamed copy of one of the retail CD's and reactivation is a
snap.
