On switching on I get the options to start in safe mode, normal etc. Whatever
I choose I get a blue screen saying windows has shut down to protect the
computer, run check disk. Then error code.
STOP: 0X00000024 (0X001901FD,0X81F258D8,0XC0000102,0X00000000)
Can't get past blue screen, any idea what the error code means.
Thanks in anticipation

My first reactin was :
"Is this s joke?"
The "Fatal BlueScreen" is a sure sign of hard drive death - but maybe not,
you need more EXPERT advice!
This article will give you a few options on failed hard drive recovery,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835840/EN-GB/#appliesto
but if you know an EXPERT, call him/her ...
If you have a warranty on your pc, call them!
If you don't, and you have money [!] then call Drive Savers 1-800-440-1904
Good Luck

If you have money is right.....

Option 1.
Buy a second HD.
Same Size as the original.
Clone your original HD to the new HD.
Run a Recovery Install of Windows using the Installation CD.

Option 2.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_swhw.asp
Nonpaged pool memory might be depleted, which can cause the system to
stop. You can resolve this situation by adding more RAM, which
increases the quantity of nonpaged pool memory available to the kernel.
In addition to Option 1.

Sorry should have told you to run the recovery console from the
original XP CD by Booting to the XP CD, and run CHKDSK /f at the prompt.

That error doe not mean your hard drive is dying. There are so many 'blue
screen' errors, most of which are merely hardware or driver conflicts.
Yours, however, seems to be file corruption, a badly fragmented hard drive,
or something like it.
First, try booting from your cd. Then, turn off/disable All your anti virus
programs, scanners, printers, firewall, and screen saver. Then, go to My
Computer>local C:>right click properties>>tool tab >error checking>check
now> select both boxes, then click okay. You will get a message that this
operation can't run until you reboot..that's what you want it to do, reboot,
then the disk checking will run. Stay with the pc while this runs, and be
advised that it could take about a half an hour. When it's done, if it does
not boot to Windows, boot from the cd again, then from the start menu got to
'run', and type this in exactly as I've typed it.
sfc /scannow

note the space between sfc and the /
Have your cd handy when you do this, you may be prompted to insert it. This
can take a while as well, and what it does is repair or replace damaged or
missing system .dll files.
Then, when that's done, go back to MY Computer>local C.right click
properties>tool tab>defragment. Defrag your hard drive.
Any questions so far?
