XP will not activate itself

XP gives me a message on product activation: "this copy of
windows must be activated with microsoft before you can
log on. Do you want to activate windows now?"

when i press "yes", i just get the same message back, what
should happen?

They aren't getting logged off. They're not being allowed to log on.

It seems that you did not activate within the allotted time after installing
Windows XP and this is why the message appeared.

What should happen when you press 'Yes' is the activation wizard should
appear and guide you through the process and then let you log in.
