XP Were have all my icons gone??

I started my machine and logged on as usual but all I get
is the desktop background with no icons, no task bar or
anything.
Any ideas what could be going on?

Steve,
I tried cmd.exe but I get the message:
"The file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action. Create an association in the
folder options control panel."

Anything else to try?

I have a similar issue. I have multiple local users. Only
the first user who signs in gets thier desktop icons or
start menu. The rest only get background theme. Would
also appreciate any ideas on how to resolve.

Right click your desktop, Arrange Icons By > Show Desktop Icons and see if
they were turned off. There are also some viruses out there that will
produce a blank shell.
