Gents,

I would like to know whether or not I could host a
website on a machine running windows xp pro.

If so I would be grateful for a quick description of what
I have to do.

Thanks in advance

You can. Having a fixed IP address, you basically need to register a domain
name and purchase a DNS hosting service. However, most domain names are
coming in a package with a cheap web hosting solution. Unless you need to
use specialties like server side scripts, database, etc... using a web
hosting solution is a much better (cheaper, safer) solution.

Firstly, thanks for the response. All i want to do is
post pictures and a few other bits and bobs on a site for
friends and family. I'm going to put the machine in a
DMZ so I'm not too concerned with the security aspect so
if I can do host a site myself then I would appreciate
your advice in how to do so.

Cheers

Since you are using XP Professional, you can install
Internet Information Services through Control Panel-
Windows Components. Then you have to enable access
through any firewall you may have to port 80. All the
webpages can be put in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot. For more
information you can read the IIS documentation after you
install it.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have now installed IIS and am up and working with a website on the computer. I have configured the router to have that PC in the DMZ, however when I try my external IP address in IE I access my router, not the web page on my pc.

Any ideas?
