Jason

I am expanding my small business from a laptop to the
laptop, a desktop and an old pentium computer as a print
server (to a printer and a plotter). I am planning on
linking them and DSL using an ethernet hub.

I need to use the same OS for everything, but I don't know
which to cchoose and why. My laptop currently runs MS XP
Home but I have been recommended to use 2000. Will 2000
become obsolete soon, or is it really a better choice?
Why?

Thanks... (e-mail address removed)

Hi Jason,

I would recommend Windows XP Professional rather than Windows 2000.

Form fits Function. XP is supposedly just 2000 with a few more bells and
whistles. I think they put too many bells and whisltes in it and made the
OS a bit less stable when seiously pushing performance (my own experince
dealing with CAD stuff.) But for most applications (Office and such) XP
actually runs much better and is more reliable, at least accoring to
published benchmarks. But I really don't trust them or XP for professional
use.

Hello Jason,

Here is a link that talks about all the great benefits of upgrading to
Windows XP Pro. It will help you to make an informed decision.

XP has more bells and whisltes, therefore requiring more system
resources plus it's more difficult to administer in some network
environments, but it also has some enhancements lacking in 2K (most of
which I think are fluff and appearances). It also has a lot more stuff
installed/enabled by default than 2K. Digging for settings to change can
also be frustrating in XP compared to 2K. The bottom line is preference
I think, both admin and user preferences. If the users are accustomed to
classic windows look and feel then the default settings in XP will be
confusing for them, they won't be able to find a lot of things unless
you take the hour+ to change things for them (they can be changed). On
the other hand XP seems more user friendly for a brand NEW user who has
never used previous versions of Windows. Having used both 2K and XP for
quite some time I have seen no significant difference in stability. I
prefer 2K. Not sure what the "end of life" for support is for 2K, though.

Why do you recommend Windows XP Professional over Windows 2000? Not that I disagree, just wondered what your reasons are

Personally, my experience has been that Windows XP has alot of wonderful features and is very stable. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, Windows XP runs on the same architecture and technology as Windows 2000 and is, therefore, comparable to Windows 2000 in performance and reliability. Yes, I know there are certain benchmarks that have made some comparisons and in certain cases Windows XP came out ahead. This is not to say that Windows 2000 is an inferior product. The other issue is usability. Some users may find Windows XP to be a wonderful interface, whereas others (myself included) find Windows 2000 very familiar and easy to use. So it all depends on the user

Anyway, there's my two cents

Let me know if you have other reasons for your recommendation, Ken

Basically,

XP is 2000 with a silly interface.
If you like then then go for that, but personally. I've had this install of
2k running for near 8 months and it never crashes or anything.
I know people whose installs of XP are always on the blink, not to say its
not their fault though.

I've had 2K since before anyone supported it, in the early days drivers were
a bugger, but now everyone's had to bring out XP drivers, which of course,
all work on 2k.

Personally I'd go for 2k.

In my opinion XP is basically a "home edition" of Win2k, as no Joe Public
would know how to use 2k, being originally designed for professional and
server use.

When MS realised they had actually made a reasonably good OS compared to the
atrocities of ME and its predecessors they repackaged it as a different OS,
that would appeal to the public market.

*does the dance on win2k*

Let's keep things in focus here. Saying that there are "benefits" in
upgrading to XP would be a reasonably fair and true statement. Saying
that there are "great benefits" is getting close to propaganda. We know
you have to push it but don't push it too far!

I don't know how people can say this. XP is much more stable than 2000
in my experience. While it never actually crashes, 2000 sometimes goes
into a state where everything slows to a crawl or stops, and you have
to reboot. XP never does, in my experience. 2000 often loses network
drives. XP doesn't. The interface can be changed back into a more
Win2k look and feel if you feel that you prefer the 2000 interface.

Cheers,

Cliff

XP over 2000 - more user features. Same kernel. WXP Pro - better than WXP
Home. Remote desktop, ability to join a domain if it comes to it...I never
recommend Home.

You can turn off the Teletubbies interface to make it look like Win2k. I
always do that right away.

LMAO! That's the best description of the standard XP
interface I've ever heard.

But I agree, XP pro has a good feature set, and can if
needed run programs in compatibility mode to simulate
previous OS's.

Oh, and get a broadband router/switch instead of a hub,
you'll have a lot less issues with unwanted traffic coming
in from the internet (hackers).

....the other one I like is "Fisher Price GUI".
I agree with you on getting an external firewall - I much prefer them.

I'm going almost a year and a half on my Windows 2000 Pro install now. It's
really been a nice stable OS for me. I really have no reason to go to XP.
