You can, but at an early point in the install process you will be asked to
provide proof of ownership of a qualifying upgrade product.....

The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous qualifying
version's installation CD (with an OEM restore CD, see below), not to have
it installed. When setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version
installed, it will prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just
insert the previous version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything
proceeds quite normally and quite legitimately.

You can also do a clean installation if you have an OEM restore CD of a
previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it *can* be done.
First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP upgrade CD from within
that restored system, and change from Upgrade to New Install. When it asks
where, press Esc to delete the partition and start over.

Yes, providing that you can produce proof of ownership of a previous
qualifying Windows version. During the installation you will be
informed that no upgradeable Windows versions were found on the hard
disk an you will be asked to insert a qualifying Windows cd in the
drive. Once the XP setup program is satisfied that you own a previous
qualifying version of Windows it will cleanly install.

Thanks for the replys. The comments re the Recovery Cd's are the ones
that are important because that is what we have, the only thing is
that we are not sure how to use them. Is it just a question of
Inserting the CD and wait for it to Run up or do we have to go in to
My Computer and look at the contents of the CD and hopefully find what
we need.
Sorry to sound so vauge but as said do not have a clue .
Any detailed help will be VERY gratefully Received
Thanks

I don't tknow how to be any more detailed than I was before. I itemized the
steps to follow, and I repeated them for you above. If there's something you
don't understand, please ask specific questions.
