reinstalling xp?

A friend of mine has a computer that came with Windows XP home edition
already installed on the hard drive. Somehow or other, the XP
operating system became corrupted. He does not have an XP disk to
reinstall.

He can purchase for under $100 a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with
Service Pack Two an UPGRADE edition.

The box says that installation can be made only if the new installation
disk detects a previous version (ie Win98) on the computer.

My question, can he install this Win XP UPGRADE version on the system
that presently has a corrupted WinXP.?

best, Aaron

Aaron;
The computer should have come with a method of restoring to factory
original.
Check the manual and/or contact the manufacturer for details.
There should be no need to purchase Windows XP.

The current installation may or may not suffice to qualify for the upgrade.

First thing is to determine if the ability to restore to the original
shipped state is still available. Consult the manufacturers web site support
pages and look for information on how to restore the system. This supplied
in a variety of ways. CD/DVD restore media, hidden restore partition, XP CD
and CD driver and application CD's.
Depends on how corrupted the current installation has become.
If you can still boot to Windows and have any of the restore options listed
above, you can get by with the upgrade version. I suggest the OEM version or
Retail Full version if you value your time is worth more than the
difference.

You can use the XP upgrade CD, but you must have the Win98 Installation
CD in order to do a complete reinstall and end up with a complete WinXP.
If you have the Win98 CD, you do not have to purchase a full version of
the XP.

I am having the same problem except my computer came installed with Windows
98. After some hardware upgrades (ram, hard drive, etc) I upgraded to XP.
Now I am having some serious problems, (pop ups, freezing, etc).
I want to format and reinstall but the only XP I have is the upgrade.
I was wondering if it is possible to use the upgrade disk todo a complete
reinstall or if I need to got out an purchase a new version of XP. Thanks
