It's a good idea to uninstall any anti-virus/firewall solutions on the
system first

Can the Home edition be upgraded to the Professional
edition?

Yes. There is no special upgrade version just for this, but the
regular XP Professional Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't
say so on the box).

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

Thanks for the reply, Ken. I asked the question because I
need to upgrade my son's home system from 98SE to XP so as
he may connect to his work system via their terminal
services. And, because I'm not sure what version of XP I
need in order to accomplish the connection, I thought --
if there was an upgrade path from Home to Professional --
I'd try to save a few dollars by starting with Home and
trying that first.

He probably needs to connect to a domain and therefore needs
Professional, then.

But I'm confused. You said he has 98. How does he get the XP Home
to start with? If you have a copy of XP Home on your machine that
you were planning on also installing on his machine, you do
realize that that's very much a violation of the license
agreement?
