Here is what happened.

I orignally had ME installed on my computer. I upgreaded
to XP a long time ago. Now I think my hard drive is dead
so I put in a new drive. Since I couldn't find my ME CD I
used my 98 CD and installed it. I then got drivers for my
motherboard and Networking card and upgraded to to XP. In
the upgrade process it Prepares for upgrade but then after
the restart it brings up the XP start screen and then does
nothing.

What is wrong? It did a similiar thing with my old hard
drive and I'm beginning to wonder if my hard drive was
fine and XP has some issues. But the new hard drive, the
one I am trying to instal on now is only 20GB drive and I
am installing FAT32 not NTFS.

Thanks

Jason

Does it boot up okay in safe mode? If it boots in safe mode it could be a
bad network card. Try pulling out your network card to see if it boots up.

I would do the following things to install XP on a new
drive.

Remove all PCI cards that are not required for the initial
installation, also printers, scanners and other devices
(physically unplug them).

Set the BIOS to boot from the CD.

Put the XP CD in the drive and reboot the computer.

Do a full clean installation, use the W98 CD as "up-grade
proof" when asked. I wouldn't bother with doing an upgrade.
The upgrade CD will do a clean install.

After XP is installed, I would install PCI cards. Then
printers, etc. One at a time, rebooting between each.

Then I would create an Internet connection, being sure to
turn the XP firewall ON when setting the connection up.
Then I would go to Windows Update and activate my
installation and download all the critical patches and most
of the recommended patches. (This includes SP1)

I would use NTFS, it is more stable, but if you are going to
dual boot to an with an older DOS based OS, you need to keep
a FAT32 partition. But XP can read either FAT32 or NTFS.
DOS based Windows doesn't read NTFS.
