Computer has Windows Millenium on a FAT32 partition.
XP Upgrade does not give option of formatting to NTFS.

How can I use my XP Upgrade and get it on a NTFS drive?

Thanks for any help.

Either use a third party app to convert the drive or do a clean install
telling xp to format to ntfs during install.
XP won't convert a fat32 drive to ntfs, it can only format in ntfs.

A retail upgrade version of XP can do a clean install or a upgrade install.
To do a clean install you just need the qualifing product handy(like win98).
When prompted you put the win98 cd in, xp verifies, and does the clean
install.
An OEM version of XP can only do a clean install.

After upgrading, open a command prompt and type;
Convert C: /FS:NTFS
It will respond with something asking if you want to dismount the volume,
Select NO!!
DO NOT dismount the volume.
It will then ask if you want to schedule the conversion at the next restart.
Select Yes for that.
Exit and restart.

Incorrect. An upgrade can do a clean install as well.

5 Steps to computer safety:
1) Use a good quality anti-virus, and keep it up-to-date.
2) Use a firewall. The one in XP works fine, but there are better ones out
there.
3) Keep Windows up-to-date. It's your choice whether or not you want the
recommended updates, but the critical updates are just that - critical.
4) Beware of adware and spyware. There are many programs that will help to
protect your computer, but it's up to you to prevent it as well. Make sure
you read the agreement of the software before you install it. It should
tell you if it will be installing any additional programs.
5) Be cautious of attachments. Microsoft NEVER sends out attachments via
email. Always scan all attachments before opening them.

Change the obvious to the obvious.

Two ways - either install as upgrade on the FAT 32 and when all is
settled, convert to NTFS (see www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm)

Or for a clean install, Run the CD from the existing system. Enter
Install, change Upgrade to New Install, then when it asks you to confirm
where, you can hit ESC and get the chance to select the current
partition, delete it, and create a new RAW one, going on to format it
as part of the setup

This will by then have made the eligibility check for the upgrade

Do an upgrade install on the fat partiation then;

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
Open Command Prompt.
In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the
ntfs format.

Notes

To open command prompt, click Start, point to Programs, point to
Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.
