I have got windows 98SE, I am tempted to upgrade it to
XP, however I am afraid that my extra hardware (Creative
SB platinum sound card, ATI all in wonder graphics card,
voice modem, etc) may stop working, or that my important
files may be lost during the upgrade...

Do anyone knows ???

Check the hardwares website and see if they have drivers for xp. I believe
both those devices will run fine on xp. You should be more concearned with
memory, processor speed, old motherboard and bios, slow older hard drives.
Many win98 computer will run xp fine, some run it poorly or not at all.
As for your files, if you do an upgrade install, they should be fine. But
ALWAYS backup important personal files, just in case.

To be sure, run the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

or that my important

By definition, an "upgrade" (as opposed to a clean installation)
means that all data, programs, etc. are kept intact.

However there are no guarantees that it always works perfectly.
However unlikely, it's always possible that something might go
wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup
of anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

Be asured it will work great, just before you start do the
following, have the latest drivers from the manufactures,
for XP, downloaded and put them on a CD, you should have
no problems. Backup your data and any files you may want,
this is crucial when you do an upgrade from any SW, Your
HD could go bad. Now the best thing to do is to do a clean
install, by inserting the XP cd then powering down the PC
completly the booting it up from the cd, remember, not to
say you do, but there are such things as boot viruses. If
you do decide to do an upgrade then take a little more
time to insure a goood install and update your virus
definitions and check for viruses, the same with spyware.
Remember that when you begin to disable the anti-virus
prior to the upgrade.

Good Luck.

It is also a good idea to disconnect and uninstall external
devices such as scanners and printers before doing the
upgrade and reinstall them after the upgrade is complete.
That way the install won't hang while looking for extraneous
drivers.

Yeah, don't do it, XP sucks, I've upgraded from 98 and
all it has given me is headaches, you have to run xp
compatibility tests on your hardware, plus the xp is full
of bugs, i was online for about 2 mins and got a bug,
never got that kind of thing on 98..my advice skip it, it
ain't worth it.

XP needs a firewall before you go on-line to get the updates
and patches, but XP has a firewall that does the job. It is
offered to be turned on when you create the Internet
connection with the wizard.

XP is very good, much better than the old DOS based Windows.
Except for hardware failure, the BSOD is almost unheard of,
this computer has never had one in two years of operation.

I had the bsod once. Don't know what the cause was. I think an
update fix that problem.

Provided you have adequate hardware to run XP - say a 400MHz CPU, *more*
than the 'recommended' 128MB RAM and about 5GB hard disk space free
during the upgrade, then an upgrade run from the 98 system should work
and retain those items. If it has not drivers for a particular item
(which is possible with the modem) it will retain the old ones, with
probably an awful warning about may not work - carry on. If you take
care to take the option to retain system files you can revert to the 98
system if it does not work out. Read Gary Woodruff`s article on
upgrading to XP at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

The problems you encountered were due to your own oversights, namely
running on the `net without taking proper precautions such as firewall
enabled, up-to-date security patches, and up-to-date antivirus and
anti-spyware programs.

Greetings --

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and *hard drives*) that will
still support Win9x.
