xp update software install error on reboot

I went to the update site and it said install the new update software, I did,
it installed then rebooted after and upon booting i get the error:
NTLDR is missing
Press any key to resart

it keeps saying the same thing over and over. Is there a fix? it appears
that NTLDR is a update file of some sort

NTLDR is one of the main bootup files:

Boot with your XP CD in the cd drive. Select 'To repair..' by pressing 'R'.
When in the Recovery Console type the following:

"copy X:\i386\ntldr C:\" - without the quotes. Where X is the letter of
your CD drive and C is the letter of your system drive. Take the XP CD out
of the cd drive and reboot into XP normally.

maybe another question is why this happened after the updates were
downloaded? it happened to me the same way, re-booting right after loading
updates for windows. i had some other issues from earlier in the week so i
wasn't sure if it might be related to them. i now think that my current
issues are related to this update.

i will be home in an hour and see what my current issue is now. after
making what i thought would be the right corrections, i now have an issue
with the ntdetect file. it is like the ones in a few other threads on this
board. like i say, when i get home i will document better. hopefully
someone will know what to do. i think it is a message that says "ntdetect is
missing" or something similar. it allows me to boot up for about five
seconds, then i get that message and it goes back to the start of booting up
and continues in that fashion until i mannually turn off the power.
