XP - Turn off never works

Hi,

Each time I want to turn off my laptop, after click on the option, the
laptop stays with the message in the center of the screen "Windows is
shutting down" (I guess this os the message) but never turn off at all.
So, to turn off completely then, I hold the on/off button for some seconds
and finally the laptop is turned off.

Do you guys noe why this happen and how can I solve the problem?
