After installing Win XP I received a screen that I should try to restart
using F8, and selecting SAFE MODE. Then I received a screen:
A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer. PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED.

If problem continuew, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

Technical information:
*** STOP Ox0000006B (OX C000003A, OX 00000002, OX 00000000,
OX 00000000)

I tried the SAFE MODE 3 times and received the same message as above.....
I have plenty of power on my HP XT858.
I also got 5 pages of an "UPGRADE REPORT" which covered
(1) Hardware that might need additional files, (Kodak, Printer, even my
Westell Modem which works great with ME.
(2)Incompatible software, i.e. Intel Graphics, Iomega stuff,
Norton Disk Doctor, etc.
(3) Update and reinstall things like Norton Systemworks 2004.
(4) No modem detected.......................
(5) and Setup found files on your computer that appear to be a backup of
part of Windows Millennium Edition . Some files in the following folders will
be removed.]:
C:\My Documents........................
Come on ! I never had problems like this before in setting up Windows !

Phewwww.

HP offer no XP support for your machine.. the highest OS supported in
Windows 2000.. the five page report relating to incompatible
hardware/software is indicative of a machine that really is not suitable for
XP.. had you run the online upgrade advisor before buying XP, you would have
found this out..

I recognise that what I have said offers little comfort, but none of your
problems are down to XP.. if you want to use XP, you are going to have to
buy a newer computer..

As Mike Hall mentioned, HP does not list Windows XP drivers for your
specific model. However they do list Windows 2000 drivers for it and
these might repeat might help. They would probably be better than the
Windows Me drivers anyway.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=57782&lang=en&cc=us&os=181

The detailed specs on the HP web site say that the motherboard is by
Trigem and that it uses the Intel 810E motherboard chipset. You
should be able to get Windows XP drivers for the 810E chipset,
including the intergrated video, from the Intel web site.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Good luck

My error. I probably confused it with some other OS that I read that said
you cannot Upgrade only to XP Home

As far as I know, there's no version of Windows which can be
upgraded only to XP Home, but not Professional. However, the
opposite is true: Windows 2000 Professional can be upgraded to XP
Professional, but not XP Home. Going from 2000 to XP Home is seen
as a downgrade, and downgrades aren't supported.

I feel bad enough, losing $100.00 and you tell me whjich I took (probably
erroniously) as sarcasm when you said: "had you run the online upgrade
advisor befor buying XP, you would have found this out."

Your final answer helped all though I was a bit "corked off" at the verbage.

Thanks anyway.......................

Not meant as sarcasm at all..

It is easy enough to see in hindsight that XP is not just a simple OS
upgrade in the same way as Windows 95 to Windows ME was.. OS architecture is
very different despite some visual similarities, and XP is generally a more
competent and heavier OS than its 9x cousins.. add to this the reticence of
hardware manufacturers to supply drivers for older equipment deemed
borderline value running under XP, and the chance of upgrading older stuff
lessens rapidly..

If I was to be asked the question "should I upgrade?", I would suggest that
the OP visits the computer manufacturer website and look for anything XP
regarding their machine.. if there was mention of XP, I would then suggest
running the online compatibility checker to confirm any problems with
software and hardware added after purchase.. if there was no mention of XP
(as in your case), I would say "DON"T GO THERE.. LEAVE WELL ALONE"..

The problem here is that not everybody sees what I suggest.. it is very
difficult to get some to research at best, and even harder to get them to
enter a newsgroup at the same time as I post the info..

'Caveat Emptor' carries no less a meaning with computer stuff as it does
with any other purchase, unfortunately..
