I am trying to connect two computers in the home using a crossover rsj45 cable, not a hub. Both computers have ethernet cards. One is XP Pro the other 2000 Pro. There is no interent connection for either machine
The set up a Home network wizard on XP does not work on 2000 Pro so I am setting both machines manually
I have set the tcp/ip settings as follows
XP: 192.168.0.2, 255.255.255.
2000: 192.168.0.3, 255.255.255.
(I have also tried setting both machines with the default gateway address of 192.168.0.1
Both have the same workgrop ID - HOM
One machine is called Matthew, the other Ro
On both machines the desktop icon indicates the "Local area connection speed is 100mbps" and the icon is lit
However, when I go to my network places and either "computers near me" or "entire network" I get the message "Home is not available. The list of servers for this workgroup is not available

I would be grateful for any assistance anyone can give me

Hope this may be helpful - have you installed and enabled, Client for MSN
Netowrks, and File & Printer Sharing on both LAN cards? I have your setup
and for the most part it works well although I am at 10mbs not 100. YOu may
need cross logins on each machine to allow better access.

Thanks for your suggestions people
Yes I have Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
I have no 3rd party firewall on either machine as they are not going to be connected to the "outside"
The Firewall for the XP machine is turned off
I have set up both machines with exactly the same user accounts - only two accounts, one machine uses one of them to log in the other uses the second one to log in.
I have disabled SFS on the XP machine
When I ping either address the message is timed out
Any other suggestions would be welcomed
