xp System restore problem

Hello

I have a laptop (HP Compaq nx9010) running XP Pro (Service Pack 1 from
memory) that I cannot log into.

The two users & administrator passwords are "correct " according to an
online Login Recovery Service I used to reveal them. However I cannot
login with any of them. I get an error message "The local Policy of this
system does not permit you to login interactively" Pressing OK takes me
back to the password entry page.

The passwords previously worked fine.

I have tried to use system restore - after starting from the original CD
I got to C:\Windows and was asked for administrator password which I
entered. The C:\windows came up again but no further instructions. Could
anyone help me from there?

Thanks
Echy

Try clicking the ? mark beside the login box to see if you provided a hint
about the password just to make sure that the password is the correct one.

It looks as if it's reformat and reinstall XP time to me.

Can you boot the computer into Safe Mode?

To start Windows XP in Safe Mode turn it on and start tapping the F8
key just as soon as the first information of any kind shows on the
screen. Keep tapping until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears and
choose Safe Mode from the menu.

Is this computer used as part of a domain? If so then the following
may be relevant:

"Sovled it by local logon to the workstation
with the local administrator account and going to local security
policy.
Double-click the policy "Log on locally"
EVERYTHING IS GRAY SO JUST CLICK OK.
Logout and try to logon with the domain user account."

Good luck

Thanks for your reply. I have established that the passwords are correct
- even though none will work for me (see my posting above).

Thanks for repying. I can boot using safe mode but when I do that I
still have the problem of the passwords being accepted.
Re your comment " Is this computer used as part of a domain? " - it is a
stand alone computer. However it was acquired third hand & I don't know
its history.

I am experiencing the same thing.

Turned the computer on this morning and got the same message. I have
several users setup on this PC and none of the users have passwords.
Just can't seem to figure out how to get around this.

I even connected it to our network via CAT-5 cable. The system
acquired an IP address from the DHCP server, but I could not see the PC
in the workgroup or even ping it by IP address. I was hoping to use
the mmc snap in the edit the group policy editor of the remote PC, but
no such luck.
