XP switches from XP style to Classic style

I've upgraded a Dell inspiron 4000 from WinME to XP Home.

The desktop came up in the Classic style. I have since
changed it to the XP style over five times, and each time
the desktop switches back (even after saving, exiting, and
rebooting) to the Classic style.

Each time - the computer beeps or whistles - it's an
unusual sound, not sure which one it is - and puts
the "Please wait" message on the screen. And the Classic
view is the only visible change.

I have no idea how to fix this, or how to explain it to a
client whom likes the XP style desktop. I am *not* going
to tell him to reset the desktop style every time it
switches back to Classic style.

This is due to a change you made in Accessibility. Reverse or modify your
changes.

No, I didn't make any Accessibility changes.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I change the setting to XP style in Display Properties\Appearance\Windows and buttons.

At rebooting, the desktop comes up in XP style. So the Themes service is enabled. The PC then chirps, and switches back to Classic style. Windows and the taskbar revert to the Classic style. And the Themes service is still enabled.

Yes, all by itself. Booting up, and then leaving the PC untouched.

You were clear. This is common behavior from a change being made here:
Start/All Programs/Accessibility: Set Wizard Options/I want to set
administrative
options/Turn off sticky keys.....High Contrast when computer has been idle
for...

Can this be reproduced? Silly question. How could it be reproduced

Hi Robert,

For the most part this has to do with High Contrast. I can't really speak
for your system or settings. I only know this has worked and is the reason
for many XP users.

To compare or verify default settings for Accessibility options, download my
edit on line 135 (right hand side and open with Notepad):
