XP "Switch User" Problem

I'm running fully updated XP MCE 2005 (XP Pro in all
but name), NOD32, ZoneAlarm Pro and UPHClean. I
have Fast User Switching and the Welcome Screen
enabled but I cant successfully "Switch User" between
accounts. If I attempt to do so the Welcome Screen
appears and I can enter the password of the
destination account. The system then displays the new
account's desktop background and the task bar and
hangs. No desktop icons, quick launch area, tasks,
system tray or clock appear. If I use Task Manager
to try to escape via Restart or Shut Down the system
starts to shut down but hangs on a black screen at
the point at which the Welcome Screen or a power down
would be expected and I have to manually power off
and on to regain access

I can change user successfully if I log off from the
currently active account first so this is merely an
inconvenience, but I would be grateful if anyone
could suggest a resolution

I began having a very similar problem a couple of months ago. I tried backing
off a couple of the Windows updates and that seemed to help, but I didn't
want to get too fare behind. I do get the desktop icons, but they are not
clickable.
