hello;

windows XP, SP2. home edition.

This is strange. All the time before, when I put my pc to sleep via (
Start->Shutdown->Standby), then I wake it up, I always would get the login
screen asking me to enter the password.

Now, it stopped doing that. I noticed that after I installed the big
security patches that MS released a week or so ago.

Any way to make XP ask me to login in again after waking it from stanby
mode?

thanks,
Nasser

Try going to Start\Run and type in 'control userpasswords2' without the
quotes, you should get a check box saying something along the lines of
'users must type in a password to log onto an account' or something
along those lines. Put an 'x' in the box, click Apply and Ok.

Thanks. I just typed the above command, and I see that the box is ALLREADY
checked !

As I said, I used to have to type in a password to login, now I do not.

This all happened after the latest security patch updates from MS.

Any thing else I can try?

I think there is something more strange in my PC than I first thought.

I just found I am unable to logoff.
I am unable to shutdown the PC.
I am unable to restart the PC.

Nothing happens. I tried all the normal way to shut it down, but nothing
happens.

from task manager, I select shutdown->turn off
nothing happens.

From start->Turn off computer->shut down
nothing happens.

Windows will not shutdown !

only choice to take the plug off the wall!

does my PC have a virus or is this a known effect from installing latest
windows patches??

I tried this:

C:\Documents and Settings\win>SHUTDOWN /s
The machine is locked and can not be shut down without the force option.

Nasser

C:\Documents and Settings\win>SHUTDOWN /s /f

now PC did shutdown.

I also installed program called profileclean.msi

once by pc did shutdown, now I do get the login screen when I put the PC
into standby.

This is really strange.

any way, I looks like the problem is fixed now. may be profileclean.msi did
help.

I would sugest unchecking the box, restarting then checking it again.
However, I see that this isn't an option for you presently. I only know
of that option owing to wanting to remove the password option from one
of my systems.
This all happened after the latest security patch updates from MS.

I've suffered no ill effects from installing the latest updates. Though
I do have my own problems :-( which weren't fixed by the updates.
Any thing else I can try?

Add and Remove programs? Uninstall the updates?

Other than a relatively cheery 'good luck' I'm afraid I'm out of ideas.

Sorry I can't help further.
